Territory Coordinator Bill

The position of Territory Coordinator is being created to drive economic growth in the Northern Territory and accelerate private sector jobs and opportunities for all Territorians. 

As an independent statutory role, the Territory Coordinator will: 

• Fast-track major investments, making it easier for investors to bring big ideas to life
• Streamline approvals across government, removing roadblocks to economic progress
• Boost the Territory’s competitiveness, attracting large-scale investments to fuel growth and development
  
  

Consultation is open until Friday 17 January 2025. 

Approvals Fast Track Taskforce

On 27 November, the CLP announced the Approvals Fast Track Taskforce, which will provide recommendations to the Government on how to reform regulatory processes and reduce approval timeframes. 

Current members include:

AMEC reached out to the Chief Minister’s office asking why no one from the mining and mineral exploration industry was included in the Taskforce, as our industry suffers greatly from approvals delays and would have recommendations to provide to such a group. 

Closure Applications for Environmental (Mining) Licence

There are two elements to the work being done by the Mining Division with different timeframes for completion/decision as appropriate: 

1. For closure applications submitted prior to 1 July 2024, these are being processed in accordance with the Mining Management Act subject to the transitional arrangements under the Environment Protection Act 2019. It is anticipated that closure certificates can be issued before Christmas/end of 2024
2. For closure applications submitted after 1 July 2024, the review process is underway. However, the timeframe for a decision is unknown as there is a requirement for the necessary forms to be developed and subject to legal review prior to being approved for use under the Environment Protection Act 2019.  This work is being impacted by the current licence applications we are progressing within the statutory timeframes
